We’re All Poor

I Spoke at MSU’s BSU yesterday. It’s been 17 years {Man I’m getting old} since I’ve been on campus and it’s really nice. I like the way the house, schools, and sports facilities are all laid out. Michael Ball is the director of State’s BSU. Our paths crossed back in the mid 90s when I attended the BSU at USM. Later he and his wife Carol were at Temple. Before I came to speak they gave me my topic, “Jesus came to preach good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18). At first I thought it would be a challenge, until I realized that poverty comes in different forms. For example in Matthew 5:3 Jesus said that there are those who are “poor in spirit”. Thus I’ve concluded they are different kind of poverty.

  • Financial Poverty- the kind we most often think of when we hear “poor”. Those with little money
  • Physical Poverty – sick, broken, and week bodies
  • Emotional Poverty – depression, stress, & anxiety
  • Social Poverty – those with few friends – introverted and isolated.
  • Spiritual Poverty – those who don’t know Christ personally or have wandered/ drifted away.

All of us are poor. We are needy. Jesus came for us to tell us that He alone could give, heal, fill, befriend, and save all who will call on Him. Don’t pretend to be rich, confess your poverty to Him and watch Him work. Different
