Snow Chasers

Early last week we got reports from family who live near Chattanooga Tennessee that Snow was on the way. We considered driving up this past weekend so our kids could get a chance to see the snow. Good thing we didn’t. Turns out we got more snow here in South Mississippi that they did! Saturday morning we started receiving text messages around 6:30 that it was “snowing”. However a quick look outside revealed falling slush. What I saw at the time was not really snow and not really sleet. So I checked weather.com and discovered a clear band of snow on 30 miles north of our home (see the image of the map from Saturday morning.) We got the kids up, packed our family into my truck and along with everyone else that has a low I.Q., proceed to travel toward the snow. My mom called my cell phone and informed me that it was snowing heavily at her home in Columbia, 30 miles West of our home. So with the offer to cook us breakfast, we turned around and headed West on Hwy 98. It wasn’t long until we were in heavy snowfall, at least for South Mississippi. We continued to drive west and I became irritated at all the slow drivers, until I felt my truck “fish tail” a few times from all the ice on the road. I quickly reduced my speed from around 65 to about 15 mph. Around 10 Miles outside Hattiesburg we started seeing cars that had slid off the road. For the next 10 miles we probably past 10-20 cars that had help from their owners running off the road. It took us about an hour or longer to make the 30 mile trip all the while the kids whining that they were hungry and the old “how much farther papa smurf” questions. Anyway, we made it safe and sound, the kids played in the snow and we had a good breakfast. However I have learned a valuable lesson. Next time snow is headed our way I’m staying put.
