To Lead You Must Follow

Posted: March 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

In Luke 9:23 Jesus said, “If any man would come after me he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Like Peter and later Paul we must first follow Christ, before we can lead others to follow him. In order for us to follow Christ, we must take up our cross daily. And it is this daily cross bearing where the rubber meets the road in the Christian life. Some has likened the cross that we bear as believers to something dreadful and weary; something that we have to do every day. While the world may see cross bearing as something burdensome, as Christians we can see that our cross is the purpose that God has intended for us to accomplish. Now don’t get me wrong I don’t think Jesus was happy about the Cross; but (Heb 12:1) “For the joy set before him he endured the cross.” While the cross brought Jesus much pain, it also brought him much joy because carrying his cross was the purpose for which he was begotton (sent to earth) for.
So today you have a cross to carry. A cross of purpose. A cross of good works which God has prepared in advance for you to do (Eph 2:10). There is much joy ahead for those who fulfill the purposes God has for them; but for now let us endure what God has set before us. So as you carry your cross, take a glace over your shoulder. What will you see? Your spouse, your children, your friends and many others carrying their cross; as they follow you, as you follow Christ. (Oh yeah be sure to watch where you are going fix your eyes on Him!)
